What CIDB grade do I need for a R5m construction project?

The CIDB grading caps the maximum contract value a contractor may bid on. For a R5 million contract, you need at least grade 5:

• Grade 4 — up to R4 million (insufficient)
• Grade 5 — up to R6.5 million ✓
• Grade 6 — up to R13 million

You also need the right class of works: GB (General Building), CE (Civil Engineering), EB (Electrical Building), etc. A JV with a grade-5 partner can also meet the requirement.
